House of Representatives has reaffirmed its resolve to support the Executive arm in the effective implementation of the state of emergency in the nation’s health sector.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Health Institutions, Dr. Amos Gwamna Magaji, announced this at a public hearing on several bills deliberated by the House and referred to his committee for proper investigation.
The hearing which discussed matters on the establishment of some health institutions, Collapse drugs funds and indebtedness, unethical process and abuse associated with the child adoption among others received contributions from various stakeholders in the health sector.
Addressing the session, Chairman of the committee Dr Amos Gwamna Magaji, said its disheartening a situation where Nigerians consider foreign health institutions as a choice for their heath matters while the nation has the best medical personnel to offer the same services.
Dr Amos Gwamna Magaji, stressed that part of the mandate of the committee was to identify the major obstacles hindering the Nigerian health institutions from providing the needed services to the citizens for proper implementation by the authorities concern.
The committee Chairman who lauded the participating stakeholders for honoring the committee’s invitation confirmed that the house in collaboration with ministries of health and Justice have started move to review laws that guiding the operations health institutions in Nigeria for optimal service delivery.
In his submission, National President Nigerian Medical Association NMA Prof Bala Muhammad Audi, said their Organisation is fully supporting move to declare State of emergency in the health sector in view of the decapitating condition and poor renumeration.
He said State of some tertiary health institutions and poor salary package has contributed to the migration of many competent and qualified medical practitioners to foreign countries despite the huge funds invested in them by the government.
Also on his part, a member fo the committee Dr Midala Usman, from Borno State faulted the executive for the poor state of the nation’s health sector the situation resulted to emergence of many preventable diseases.
The lawmaker who appreciated medical personnel in the country for their selfless services despite the poor package encouraged them continue to demonstrate sense of patriotism and dedication as plans were on to improve their welfare.
The public hearing which lasted for two days attracted participants from the ministry of health, ministry of justice, Nigerian Medical Association, National Association of Mide wifery, Joint Health Sector Unions among others.
