Edo State House of Assembly has impeached the state’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.
The impeachment followed the adoption of the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu.
He was impeached during the house’s plenary session on Monday in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
Charity Aiguobarueghian, the House Majority Leader who announced the impeachment notice during plenary, said the petition, dated March 5, was signed by 21 out of the 24 members of the house against the deputy governor.
The majority leader said the report of the 7-man judicial panel of inquiry had 2 findings and 1 recommendation.
She, however, stated that the report of the panel was unable to establish the case of perjury levelled against the deputy governor but found him guilty of disclosure of government secrets.
The Clerk of the House, Alhaji Yahaya Omogbai, who conducted a head count of the lawmakers, said that 2/3 (16 members of the house) were needed to carry out the impeachment.
At the end of the head count, of the 19 lawmakers, 18 voted for his impeachment, while 1 voted against it.
The assembly thereafter upheld and approved the impeachment of the deputy governor.
Meanwhile, the Speaker, Mr. Blessing Agbebaku has directed the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Yahaya Omogbai, to forward copies of the impeachment to the Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for assent.
