The weeklong free comprehensive eye care mission courtesy of TY Danjuma Foundation has been concluded with over one thousand beneficiaries in Takum LGA of Taraba State.
The exercise was carried out by the foundation in partnership with the Care Vision Support Initiative (CAVSI) at the General Hospital Takum.
While fielding questions from journalists, Program Officer Health of the Foundation, Christie Ogben said the gesture was aimed at assisting those who could not afford treatment for their eye problems.
Speaking to Journalists, Programme Officer Health of the foundation, Christie Ogben said the mission was to improve the sight of people with various forms of visual impairments as part of its effort to curb blindness and promote access to quality and affordable eye health in Nigeria.
She said the foundation has been working in various parts of Nigeria since 2010 till date, with the view of assisting the less privileged who cannot afford medical care considering the importance of eyes to humans.
“We carried out awareness campaigns on Radio, to churches, and our social media platforms for one month before the commencement of the exercise, to enable people to come and benefit from this gesture and we thank God it yielded a positive result,” said Ogben.
Christie Ogben called on well-to-do Nigerians to emulate TY Danjuma Foundation in assisting the less privileged in society.
A health Physician who is also the Programme Officer for Care Vision Support Initiative (CAVSI) Dr. Kumbak Danjuma described the gesture as timely and appreciated the TY Danjuma Foundation for assisting less privileged.
He highlighted the statistics for the eye camp for the beneficiaries comprising registration of 1,547, Visual acuity of 1,482, consultation 1,547, drugs 1,223, Glasses 737, Referrals 121, Surgeries 0, cataracts 136, and pterygium 18 as well as foreign body removal 1.
Some beneficiaries Malama Hauwa Muhammed and James Oji in an interview said they lack words to express their gratitude but prayed to God Almighty to reward Gen. Theophilus Danjuma and his partners for the gesture as the treatment had renewed their hope in life.
Our Correspondent observed that people came out in their numbers old and young, with most of them lacking the financial muscle to treat their eye problems.
