Local government autonomy has been described, as a major catalyst to eradicating insecurity and banditry.

Member representing Bunkure local government area, Alhaji Muhammad Uba Gurjiya made the indication, during a dialogue with journalists in Kano.

According to him, insecurity and banditry activities in the nation was promoted by poverty, unemployment and inadequate means of livelihood in some communities.

The lawmaker noted that, most local government areas are managing funds received from state government’s, which leads to enroachment of grazing fields, and other relevant means of survival, thereby increasing poverty and unemployment.

Alhaji Muhammad Uba Gurjiya said, the National Assembly had granted administrative and financial autonomy to all local governments across Nigeria, which would pave way for more developmental projects and dividends of democracy.

He said, both chambers of the National Assembly during voting on the constitutional amendment, voted in favour of local government administrative autonomy, as a tier of government and guarantee their democratic existence and tenure.

Alhaji Muhammad Uba Gurjiya however stressed that, legislative, judicial and local government autonomy are vital to the development of the state and nation in general.

The lawmaker attributed the slow pace of implementing the local government autonomy to the attitude of some state governors..

” 25 only 10 states have made progress on the issue of constitutional amendment”

He appealed to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to expedite action on the speedy implementation of the local government autonomy to move the state forward

Radio Nigeria reports that, in June 2022 during a one day media engagement, on the proposed local government administrative financial autonomy supported by PERL (ECP), the head of legislative services, Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Garba Bako Gezawa says the passage of local government autonomy bill into law, would enhance socio economic viability of the people and address insecurity.
