Kano State Government has reiterated its dedication to the protection of lives and property of citizens.
Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, made the assertion during an International Press Conference to commemorate 2022 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction(IDDRR) in Kano.
According to him, his administration would continue to map out various policies and programs aimed at protecting and preserving the lives and property of Kano citizens.
Dr. Ganduje who was represented by Kano state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Getso, said the Untied Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has set aside October 13, to celebrate IDDRR.
He highlighted that, the day was imperative and necessary to increase disaster risk information and communication, as a tool for public awareness.
While describing the cost of managing disaster as enormous, which may deplete the available resources for planned activities , he charged the public to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainages, water ways and adhere to building codes and environmental rules and regulations, as well as regular clearance of drainages.
“Disaster are the source of transient hardship,distress, loss of lives, I’ll health, damage to infrastructure such as roads, environmental pollution and degradation among others”
In his remarks,the Executive Secretary Kano State Emergency Management Agency Dr Saleh Aliyu Jili, said the state government has set up strong mechanisms aimed at mitigating risk and disaster across the state.
He said the IDDRR day, was set aside by the United Nations to celebrate people working to save other people’s lives, restore hope , build confidence and give them sense of belonging, after suffering devastations brought upon them by calamities.
Dr Jili stressed that, the agency had recorded over 20,000 cases of flood, over 15,000 farm lands were washed away and rescued eight people trapped in a collasped building at Beirut Road GSM Market Kano in 2022.
“23 persons lost their lives and 100 persons were injured which we believed was as a result of non-adherence to the warnings and advised by SEMA and other Stakeholders”
Also speaking the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Kano Territorial Co-ordinator, Dr Nuradeen Abdullahi, called on all relevant stakeholders and NGOs to be committed on early warning to mitigate flood.
Radio Nigeria reports that, the press conference Organized by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) themed ” 2022 IDDRR Early Warning and Early Action for all” witnessed large turn out of officials from NEMA, Kano fire service, Navy, Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, development partners among others.
