The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has described as sad and disappointing the rejection of women’s Bills by members of the National Assembly.
Mrs. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, made the statement at a press briefing while reacting to the rejection of three Bills that affects women during the just constitutional amendment process by the house in Abuja
The Deputy Chief Whip who expressed the worry of Nigerian women said the rejection of seats for women at the National Assembly and the provision of 35% affirmative action to women was a big blow for the future of women’s participation in politics.
The lawmaker who was the sponsor of the Bill said Nigeria is the least in terms of women representation in the world, stressed that rejection of the Bill will continue to cause the country to lose a lot from development partners.
Also in an interview, a member from Borno State, Hajiya Zainab Gimba, observed that the bills were misunderstood by the majority of the lawmakers.
Hajiya Zainab Gimba, stressed that they would have assisted a lot because women find it tough to contest for seats due to men’s dominance in the political scene.
She, however, expressed optimism that the rejection would make women in Nigeria sit up and work hard to improve the situation in the future.
