House of Representatives is to declare a national emergency on ritual killings in Nigeria.
The resolution follwed a motion by the house Deputy minority leader Mr Toby Okechukwu on the urgent need to curb the rising trend of ritual killings in Nigeria.
Mr Toby Okechukwu told the house that the incidents of ritual killings have assumed an alarming rate recently in Nigeria claiming the lives of many innocent citizens.
The lawmaker, pointed out that a statistics released by the Red Cross in it’s 2017 report indicates that over 10,000 cases of missing persons in Nigeria have been recorded, a situation that required urgent steps to stop the trend.
The minority leader who observed that the merchants of such wicked acts used the social media to advertise their evil acts, also accused the movie industries of frequently dramatizing the act which can have negative impact on youths.
He appealed to the media to use their outfits in playing a vital role towards educating society on danger of the ugly trend.
Adopting the motion, the House called on the media, National Orientation Agency, parents, heads of schools as well as traditional and religious leaders to undertake a campaign to change the negative narrative that pervade the country.
The house resolution also urged the executive Director, National Film and video censor’s board to rise to the mandate of the agency as the clearing agency of movies made in Nigeria.
It however, called on the Inspectoe General of Police to urgently increase surveillance and intelligence gathering with a view to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of ritual killings in Nigeria.
