The United Nations says it will continue to partner with Federal and Borno state governments to restore livelihood of people devastated by Boko Haram insurgency.

United Nations Under Secretary General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mr. Martin Griffiths stated this when he led a high level UN delegation on a courtesy visit to Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum at Government House Maiduguri.

Mr. Griffiths explained that his visit to Borno was to assess the humanitarian situation and how to sustain the relative peace in the state.

The UN Under Secretary General said he has also visited Bama town and interacted with Idps, expressing delight on how peace and economic situation had gradually improved.

“returning this society to a place where families can return their children to school, where livelihood can be assured for all, where peace is as much a part of community life as is development, this is vision for the future” Mr. Griffiths noted.

Mr. Martin Griffiths expressed commitment of the humanitarian community to continue to provide assistance to people in need.

Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum thanked the UN system for the continued support.

He called on the United Nations and other partners to step up intervention in official camps outside Maiduguri where one million people are in need of assistance.

“We called on all our support partners to channel and align their support towards improving the livelihoods of our people who have been resettled, we recognise that there is much more to be done and we cannot do it alone” Zulum said.

Governor Babagana Zulum emphasised that the focus of his administration is how to address the root causes of insurgency, that is, addressing infrastructural deficit, climate vulnerability and increasing rate of poverty.
