Borno state government has launched the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, with the disbursement of 418 million naira to 79 Primary Healthcare Centres across the State.
The event which took place at the Multipurpose Hall of the Government House, Maiduguri, had in attendance Governor Babagana Zulum, Minister of State for Health, and the National President Nigerian Medical Association.
Governor Zulum said the fund is meant for primary healthcare centers to sustainably procure drugs, some medical consumables, and also fund some human resource for a period of one year.
According to him, the 418 million was in addition to 300 million earlier released for the procurement of drugs distributed to primary healthcare centers, noting that the state has sustained its provision of free maternal healthcare services to residents.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adeleke Mamora directed the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to support the Borno State Contributory Health Care Management Agency.
Represented by the Chief Medical Director of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, the Minister lauded Governor Zulum for the ongoing construction of the State University Teaching Hospital and establishment of a medical college, as well as the construction of numerous primary healthcare centres in the state.
Executive Secretary Borno State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, Dr. Saleh Abba Kaza said the agency has enrolled over 35,000 people into the scheme.
He explained that the Agency particularly targeted vulnerable population made up of physically challenged persons, children below five years, pregnant women and low cadre civil servants.
