Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state has signed the Child Protection Law aimed at enhancing children living conditions in the state.

Speaking after signing the law, the governor described it as a major landmark achievement of his administration.

Radio Nigeria correspondent in the state reports that Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law was also signed by the Governor which was geared towards ending all forms of gender-based violence and sexual abuse related cases in the state

The law was signed in an elaborate ceremony attended by the United Nation’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, the Chief Field Officer of UNICEF in Sokoto, Mr Maulid Warfar, Plan International representative among others.

While speaking, Mr.Edward Kallon lauded Gov. Tambuwal’s resilience as well as other bodies and individuals in ensuring the enactment of the law and appealed to other States in the country to emulate the Sokoto state Government by passing laws that safeguard women and children rights.

Kallon notes that EU-UN Spotlight Initiative Project was geared towards promoting the rights of individuals and ensure harmonious living conditions of people free from all forms of abuses and empowering women and girls with requisite livelihood skills in the society.

The Governor commended the state House of Assembly, Commissioner for justice Mr. Suleiman Usman SAN, and that for Women and Children Affairs Hajiya Kulu Sifawa for their efforts in ensuring that the bill conformed with states enshrined cultural and religious norms and values.
