National Population Commission NPC says the lengthy Covid 19 pandemic lockdown has greatly affected women and girls which resulted to unplanned pregnancies.

The National Chairman of the Commission, Dr Nasir Isa Kwarra stated this in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital.

Represented by the Jigawa state federal commissioner Alhaji Garba Zakar noted with dismay that women and girls mostly encountered difficult economic and social challenges including lack of access to basic health care during the lockdown

He said in an effort to address the problems brought by the pandemic, issues of reproductive health especially family planning suffered complete neglect thereby reversing the gains made on population management to control population growth

The National Chairman lamented that the trend if unchecked, might have long term negative impact on the effort made so far to moderate Nigeria’s population growth to better the lives of its citizens.

Radio Nigeria reports that the theme for this year’s world population day is rights and choices are the answer: Whether baby boom or bust, the solution to shifting fertility rates lies in prioritizing the reproductive health and rights of people
