Senate has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in communities affected by flooding and gully erosion in Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi and other parts of the country.
The call followed separate motions moved by Senators Victor Umeh of Anambra Central, Anthony Ani of Ebonyi South and Osita Izunaso of Imo West, who drew attention to the loss of lives, destruction of homes and farmlands, and displacement of residents caused by the disasters.
The lawmakers urged the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to provide relief materials, including food, medical supplies and other essential items, to affected communities.
They also called on the relevant federal ministries responsible for works and environment to assess damaged roads, restore access routes and implement sustainable measures to address flooding and gully erosion.
Adopting the prayers of the motions, the Senate, presided over by its President, Godswill Akpabio, mandated relevant ministries and agencies to assess the affected areas and implement appropriate emergency and long-term measures.
The lawmakers also observed a minute’s silence in honour of those who lost their lives in the disasters.
