The Executive Secretary, Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board KSPVIB Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, has urged private school owners to strictly adhere to approved curricula, warning that schools found deviating from prescribed standards could face sanctions, including temporary or permanent closure.
Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar gave the warning while briefing Newsmen on the amended law regulating the operation of private schools in the state.
He said the amended law was aimed at sanitising the private school sector, protecting parents from arbitrary charges and ensuring compliance with educational standards.
The Executive Secretary disclosed that the amended law prohibits private schools from increasing tuition fees by more than 10 percent from the beginning of the 2026/2027 academic session.
He said the law also regulates the process of increasing school fees and prohibits schools from compelling parents to purchase books, uniforms, cardigans and other items as a condition for their children’s education.
He said the amended legislation further defines the role of Parent-Teacher Associations, stressing that the PTA is expected to provide an advisory role and not manage schools.
On external examinations, the Executive Secretary said the law covers examinations conducted by WAEC, NECO, NBAIS among others.
He warned school owners against encouraging students to sit for external examinations prematurely while they are still in SS2, saying such practices could undermine the integrity of the education system.
Comrade Baba Abubakar disclosed that the State House of Assembly had approved a 7.5 percent charge payable by private schools, which will now serve as the benchmark in accordance with the amended law.
He added that the amended legislation provides for registration and renewal fees, school inspection fees, application fees for new schools and school upgrading fees.
The Executive Secretary assured private school owners that the board would enforce the amended law with fairness and caution, stressing that the objective was not to intimidate operators but to promote quality education and ensure a harmonious relationship among school owners, parents and teachers.
He also commended the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for providing resources for the renovation and upgrading of the board’s office.
