The Arewa Youth Development Association (AYDA) has strongly criticised the Northern Youth Forum (NYF) over its recent vote of no confidence in Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), describing the move as reckless and misguided.

In a statement signed by the National President AYDA Comrade Ahmad Bello Rimi said the action by the NYF demonstrated a lack of understanding of the country’s security structure and the complexities involved in tackling insecurity.

The association explained that while Nigerians are concerned about the recent rise in banditry, kidnappings and attacks in some parts of the country, publicly calling for the removal of the defence minister was an irresponsible response that could undermine ongoing security efforts.

AYDA noted that the minister, a former Chief of Defence Staff, had built a reputation as a professional soldier who spent decades serving the country in various military operations.

According to the group, the minister recently convened a meeting involving service chiefs and the National Security Adviser to review current security strategies and address emerging threats across the country.

The association said such steps demonstrated proactive leadership in confronting security challenges.

AYDA also pointed to the minister’s previous involvement in operations against insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, noting that his military career reflected years of frontline service.

The group warned against politicising national security issues, stressing that security management requires coordination, intelligence gathering and sustained operations.

Arewa Youth Development Association called on the Northern Youth Forum to withdraw its statement and avoid actions that could undermine the morale of security personnel currently deployed in various operations across the country.

The association reaffirmed its support for the defence minister and the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging Northern leaders and youth groups to focus on constructive engagement in addressing the region’s security challenges.
