Kano State Government  has approved ₦99 million for the implementation of Phase I of an Anti-Rabies Control Programme aimed at protecting public health and strengthening livestock development.

According to the commissioner Kano state ministry of livestock development Dr Aliyu Isah, at least 10,000 dogs are expected to be vaccinated during the first phase of the initiative.

He noted that , the approval is part of efforts to prevent the spread of rabies, a deadly but preventable viral disease that affects both animals and humans.

“Rabies is commonly transmitted through dog bites and poses a serious public health threat, as it is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Health experts consider mass dog vaccination the most effective way to control and eliminate the disease”

Dr. Aliyu described the programme as a critical step toward safeguarding human lives and improving animal welfare across Kano State.

He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure effective implementation.

“In addition to the vaccination campaign, the ministry has also planned a statewide dog census to generate accurate data that will support long-term rabies prevention and control strategies”.

The commissioner called on residents to cooperate with vaccination teams by presenting their dogs for immunization and supporting government efforts to eliminate rabies in the state.
