Chairman NUJ – FRCN Kaduna Chapel, Comrade Umar Adamu Sarkinfada

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FRCN Kaduna Chapel, Comrade Umar Adamu Sarkinfada, has described bad journalism practices as a serious threat to professionalism, public trust and national stability.

In his New Year message to journalists, Sarkinfada warned that the spread of fake news, poor investigative reporting and the activities of untrained individuals posing as journalists are damaging the image of the media profession and undermining the work of credible practitioners.

He noted that unverified and sensational reports, especially on sensitive national issues, could fuel panic, misinformation and social tension, while the actions of unprofessional actors often tarnish the reputation of responsible journalists.

The NUJ chairman urged journalists to recommit themselves to professional ethics, stressing the importance of accuracy, balance, fact-checking and thorough investigation in line with NUJ policies and the code of ethics.

He also called on media organisations to strengthen internal regulatory mechanisms and prioritise continuous training, while advising the public to rely on credible news sources and verify information before sharing.

Sarkinfada reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ FRCN Kaduna Chapel to promoting professionalism and media integrity, describing the new year as an opportunity for renewed dedication to responsible journalism in Nigeria.
