The public has been urged to work collectively to ensure universal access to clean and sanitised toilets, a key step in preventing diseases and safeguarding public health.

The call was made by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, represented by the Director of WESH, Alhaji Dauda Garba Falgore, during the 2024 World Toilet Day commemoration across the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State.

He stressed that improved sanitation can only be achieved through strong collaboration between the government, communities, and individuals.

Speaking on progress made so far, the Commissioner noted that Kano State has recorded significant achievements in sanitation, with 36 out of 44 LGAs already declared free from open defecation.

He added that ongoing initiatives including improved access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education have contributed to this milestone.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Kabo Local Government and representative of the 44 council chairmen, Alhaji Lawan Najume Kabo, commended Governor Yusuf for his support in advancing sanitation efforts at the grassroots.

He noted the construction and rehabilitation of boreholes, public toilets, and other sanitation facilities, alongside hygiene awareness campaigns that have begun to yield positive results.

This year’s World Toilet Day, themed “Sanitation in a Changing World: We Will Always Need Toilets,” featured sensitisation marches and awareness campaigns in markets, motor parks, schools, and other densely populated areas to promote good hygiene practices and behavioural change.
