Kano State Government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at leveraging the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) framework to combat environmental degradation and improve public health across the 44 local government areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, announced the initiative during a meeting with the Forum of 44 Local Government Heads of Department for Water, Environment, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WESH).

He explained that the new approach will also revive the long-abandoned house-to-house inspection system, a crucial measure for ensuring compliance with environmental and health regulations at the grassroots level.

The commissioner noted that the Governor’s directive for the construction of public toilets and boreholes in densely populated communities and schools would go a long way in improving sanitation, ensuring access to clean water, and curbing the spread of communicable diseases.

Tajo also disclosed that Kano State recently ranked first in Nigeria in the control of open defecation , a feat he described as a reflection of the administration’s dedication to improving sanitation and hygiene.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hajiya Fatima Adamu Barde, thanked the forum for their recognition and assured continued support to strengthen the department’s operations.

She also urged members to remain vigilant and report any challenges affecting the well-being and livelihood of citizens at the grassroots.

The Chairman of the Forum of 44 Local Government HODs of WESH, Malam Sani Panda, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner and the state government for their support and pledged to continue working diligently to promote environmental sustainability and public health across Kano State.
