A Special Anniversary Commentary By Shuaibu Sani Muhammad, Radio Nigeria Horizon FM, Dutse; Editing By Yusuf Zubairu

Today, the 4th of October, 2025, a special atmosphere fills the air across the Kongo and Samaru campuses of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

For those of us who once walked its halls, this day brings deep reflection, memories of learning, friendship, and the pride of belonging to one of Africa’s finest universities.

Founded in 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria and later renamed in honour of the great Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, the university was built to serve as a beacon of learning and leadership for a new nation.

From just four faculties and 426 students, ABU has grown into an academic powerhouse with 17 faculties, over 100 departments, 500 professors, and more than half a million alumni across the world.

Its motto — Discipline, Self-Reliance, and Excellence — continues to define its spirit and purpose.

Over the decades, ABU has championed the decolonization of knowledge through research and innovation, especially via the Arewa House in Kaduna.
Recent global rankings and the appointment of Professor Adamu Ahmad as Vice-Chancellor mark a new era of progress and renewed hope.

But this anniversary is not only about celebration it’s also a time to reflect.

Our great university stands at a crossroads. Can its vast infrastructure meet modern demands? Can it adapt to the digital age, promote innovation, and remain globally competitive?

Now, more than ever, we must rekindle the values that made ABU great, discipline, self-reliance, and a pursuit of excellence.

As alumni, we must go beyond nostalgia. Let us give back, mentor the younger generation, and help sustain this legacy of learning.

As we celebrate 63 years, we celebrate a vision, a vision that from the heart of Zaria, disciplined and self-reliant leaders will continue to rise, shaping Nigeria and the world for generations to come.

Happy 63rd Anniversary, ABU Zaria, the Giant of the North, the Pride of the Nation.
