Fear and grief have once again engulfed Sokoto State after several villagers lost their lives in a boat mishap in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident occurred while the victims were fleeing a fresh wave of attacks by Lakurawa terrorists when their overloaded boat capsized.
When contacted, the Public Relation officer of the Sokoto State Police Command,ASP Abubakar Rufa’ i confirmed the tragedy to Radio Nigeria in the state .
The PPRO said the exact number of passengers on board is yet to be determined, stressing that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
An eyewitness who refused to disclose his name told Radio Nigeria that the victims were desperate villagers who are trying to escape from the siege of LAKURAWA bandits.
This incident marks the fourth fatal boat accident in Sokoto within two months, raising fresh concerns over insecurity and unsafe water transport.
Residents of Sabon Birni and nearby communities remain under siege, with criminal gangs mounting checkpoints, burning farmlands, and displacing villagers in the area.
Radio Nigeria reports that grieving families are waiting by the riverbanks as rescue teams continue to search for missing loved ones.
