In its ongoing efforts to sanitize the education system, a court sitting in Kano has ordered the immediate closure of six private schools for violating state regulations, including unlawful fee hikes and imposing compulsory textbook purchases and other illegal charges on parents.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board (KSPVIB), Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, made the disclosure while briefing Journalists.
According to him, the affected schools are Prime College, Darul Ulum, Gwani Dan Zarga College, Unity Academy, Dano Memorial Academy, and Auwa Academy.
He pointed that the board is also awaiting a court order to shut down Nurul Islam School and As-Saif College.
“The schools increased fees without following due process and failed to properly communicate book lists to parents, among other violations,” Baba Umar explained.
The executive secretary who doubles as the Special Adviser to the governor on Private and Voluntary Institutions revealed that the affected schools have been directed to suspend all academic activities pending court hearings scheduled for September 30 and October 7, 2025.
Baba Umar further noted that the state government has established KSPVIB zonal offices across the 44 local government areas to monitor and clamp down on illegal schools as well as institutions that disobey state laws.
He stressed that the government has made education a top priority, pointing out that out of more than 7,000 private and voluntary schools in Kano, only about 2,700 are duly registered.
“Data collection is crucial for effective academic planning, curriculum design, quality teacher deployment, and the creation of a conducive learning environment,” he said.
While acknowledging the importance of schools in the education system, he emphasized that proprietors must comply with regulations.
“We don’t like closing or suspending schools, but many proprietors feel too big to obey the law. I want to assure you that in Kano State, no school is above the law,” he declared.
He also appealed to parents to ensure timely payment of school fees, as it enables schools to pay staff salaries and improve academic planning.
Comrade Umar reaffirmed that the state government will not relent in its commitment to uplift education to global standard.
