A coordinated assessment team has reported that more than four hundred and seventy children were displaced following a devastating flood in Zaria, Kaduna State.
It also revealed that about two hundred and seventy households were affected by the disaster and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
The assessment team, were Nigerian Red Cross Society, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Director of Emergency and Security Services, and the Deputy Director of Welfare.
The team were led by the Chairman Zaria Local Government Area, Alhaji Jamil Ahmad Muhammad Jaga, proceeded to Kofar Kuyanbana to assess the full extent of the damage.
The flood, triggered by heavy rainfall in the early hours of Thursday, wreaked havoc on several communities, including Gangaren Mobil and Bayan Cinema in Tudun Wada Ward, as well as Magume, Bako Zuntu, and Kamacha in Tukur Tukur Ward.
The sudden rise of floodwaters swept away valuable belongings such as clothing, electronics, household items, and essential food supplies. Despite widespread destruction, authorities confirmed that no lives were lost, a development they attributed to divine mercy.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Zaria Division, has taken the lead in providing immediate relief to displaced families while appealing for urgent support to aid the victims.
