A Memorandum of Understanding to provide over forty million digital devices to students and teachers in basic education, especially in the rural areas across the country, has been signed in Abuja.

The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hajia Aisha Garba, explained that the agreement under the Public Private Partnership would avail the beneficiaries of constant internet connectivity, retraining of teachers, and job creation.

‎She said, “This partnership aims to provide about 47 million students with laptops and devices, as well as provide devices to teachers in Nigeria within the basic education sector. This includes the pre-primary, primary, and junior secondary schools. The project will focus particularly on areas that are remote and hard to reach.”

Hajia Aisha also stated that regional hubs would be established for easy distribution.

“A regional hub will be set up in each of the zones in Nigeria where these devices will be assembled and distributed across the state.”

The president of the Digital Learning Network, Thomas Larmena, said the partnership was part of its social corporate responsibility to support and transform the education sector in Nigeria.

Mr. Larmena stated that they were working with global partners such as Samsung and financial institutions in collaboration with the Nigerian Governors Forum to actualize the project.

State governments are also expected to sign the same agreement to kick-start the project.
