House of Representatives has passed a resolution calling for the establishment of additional permanent National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps and the renovation of existing ones across the country.

The decision followed the adoption of a motion by a member from Lano state Alhaji Garba Ibrahim Diso, during plenary session presided over by Speaker Dr Abbas Tajuddeen.

Alhaji Garba Ibrahim Diso, explained that the scheme established in1973 with the objectives of fostering national unity, integration, patriotism and promoting
peaceful coexistence among the citizens from different backgrounds has been faced with a lot of challenges at different levels.

He expressed worried over the current dilapidated state of permanent orientation camps in the country causing dissatisfaction due to inadequate facilities overstretching the existing facilities, leaving Corp Members with no options than to be redeployed to neighbouring states for camping activities.

Mover of the motion noted that as some States lack orientation camps to accommodate and meet the increasing number of Corp members deployed other States temporarily utilize secondary school buildings to accommodate prospective Corps members.

He maintained that due to space limitations, Corps members frequently have to travel for longer periods of time after being deployed stressing the need for spacious, habitable orientation camps, with each camp accommodating at least 5,000 participants at a time across the states of the Federation.

Alhaji Garba Disp, further urged the urge Federal Ministry of Youth, in collaboration with other stakeholders, to work out modalities to achieve the construction and expansion of NYSC orientation camps across the country.

After deliberation on the motion the house the house has referred the matter to its Committees on Youth Development and Legislative to liaise with the relevant stakeholders in implementing the house resolution and report back to the chamber in four weeks for further legislative action.
