Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has announced an approval of N8 billion to settle outstanding pension and gratuity payments for retired primary school teachers and other civil servants who have worked with the state government.

The governor made the announcement on Wednesday at the Government House in Maiduguri, during a meeting in the council chamber.

In his commitment to addressing pension issues, Zulum had previously disbursed N3 billion in June and September 2019 to pay the gratuities of 1,684 retirees who had left the civil service between 2013 and 2019.

Additionally, in 2020, over N12 billion was allocated to settle the gratuities for retirees who left both the state and local government service between 2013 and 2017.

“To date, since I assumed office in 2019, we have paid around N25 billion towards the settlement of gratuities for local and state government retirees,” Zulum remarked.

Looking ahead, Governor Zulum reassured the public that his administration remains committed to resolving all pension and gratuity arrears. He expressed confidence that all outstanding payments will be fully settled before the conclusion of his tenure in 2027.
