Kebbi State Launches Reform, Unveils New Units in Ministry of Justice

The Kebbi State Government has inaugurated the State Justice Sector Reform Team, Steering Committee, and unveiled two additional units in the Ministry of Justice: Citizens’ Rights and Public Engagement, and the Gender Based Violence GBV Support Unit.

Speaking during the inauguration of the team, Governor Nasir Idris said the event was in line with the Justice Sector Reform Law of 2023, which he signed into law on December 29, 2023.

The Governor said the laws were extremely significant to the good people of Kebbi State, reflecting the commitment of his administration towards improving cooperation, planning, and implementation of justice sector administration.

He said lack of effective coordination and cooperation had led to the congestion of custodial centers and the prevalence of Awaiting Trial Inmates, adding, “We are ready to address the problem of lack of effective coordination and cooperation.” 

According to the Governor, the team would serve as a forum for coordination and planning among the sector, adding that the law has brought together critical stakeholders in the justice system

He restated his administration’s commitment to the full implementation of the Justice Sector Reforms saying, this will bolster timely, just and efficient justice delivery to the people of the state.

Inauguration of the Kebbi state Justice Reform Team

The Chairman of the Justice Reform Team and the State Attorney- General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Junaidu Bello Mashal, explained that, the essence of the reform was to reduce rights violations, increase public awareness to justice, ensure protection of the rights of citizens and facilitate speedy trial of cases.

The Chairman of the steering committee and Chief Judge of the state, Justice Umar Abubakar, stated that, the reform would improve justice delivery and enhance the speedy dispensation of cases in courts.
