The National Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of Nigeria (NCNCSON) have brought to attention the ongoing farmer’s registration process in Taraba State, which is being facilitated by TAFED.
In a statement released to the press on Thursday, Mr. Mike Adiel, the State Secretary General of NCNCSON, Taraba Chapter, highlighted critical challenges that demand immediate attention from the State Government.
The farmer’s registration process has raised concerns for the welfare and safety of the agricultural community, particularly at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
The experiences of farmers at the registration venues have been problematic, and the NCNCSON acknowledges the importance of accurate data.
Furthermore, they commended the Taraba State Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for initiating this crucial registration drive.
However, there are urgent challenges that require the immediate attention of the State Government to ensure the success of the farmer’s registration process and prevent harm to the farmers.
According to the statement, the centralization of registration points has resulted in overcrowding, leading to stampedes and unconfirmed reports of deaths.
It pointed out that many farmers lack proper information about the registration process, and there are concerns regarding the quality of the data collected.
To address these challenges effectively and ensure that only genuine farmers, especially those who own land, are captured in the registration process, the NCNCSON recommends a combination of technological and community-driven approaches.
It suggested that decentralization of registration points to ward levels or community headquarters, where local leaders and organizations have intimate knowledge of the farming population, can improve accessibility and accuracy.
Moreover, engagement with farmers’ associations and community-based organizations, equipped with expertise in data collection, analysis, and program implementation, is crucial for ensuring the integrity of the registration process.
The NCNCSON urges the Taraba State Government to consider leveraging the expertise of the National Council of NGOs and CSOs of Nigeria in addressing these challenges and implementing effective strategies for the farmer’s registration process.
As Taraba State is predominantly an agricultural community, a “no harm” approach must be adopted to safeguard the well-being of our farmers throughout the process. The statement emphasized.
The NCNCSON reaffirms its full support for the farmer’s registration initiative and other transparent efforts aimed at enhancing farming practices, supporting farmers, and fostering the development of Taraba State.
