Written by Bunmi Abdulraheem

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, has met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the strike action by the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD).

At the meeting, Dr Abbas briefed the President on the outcome of his meeting with the NARD leadership.

He also appealed to President Tinubu to wade into the matter with a view to addressing the issues raised by the resident doctors.

The Resident Doctors commenced an indefinite strike on Wednesday.

Foremost among their demands is the immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund.

Additionally, they are demanding the prompt release of the circular on one-for-one replacement.

Also, the striking Doctors want arrears and upward review of consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS), in line with full salary restoration to the 2014 value of CONMESS.

Equally, they are insisting on the settlement of arrears of the consequential adjustment of minimum wage for doctors who were omitted from the initial implementation.

Furthermore, they are pressing for the reversal of the downgrading of their membership certificates by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

Apart from salary-related issues, the striking doctors are also calling for the introduction of a new hazard allowance, in addition to demanding the implementation of corrected CONMESS in state health institutions and prompt payment of omitted hazard allowance arrears.
