INEC To Conduct Mock Accreditation Nationwide

Written by Bunmi Abdulraheem

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu says a mock accreditation will be conducted ahead of the 2023 general election.

Professor Yakubu, who made the announcement on Tuesday during a speech at Chatham House, London, said the aim was to “ascertain the integrity of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System” before the elections proper.

The INEC Chairman said the mock accreditation would be carried out across selected polling units nationwide, and assured Nigerians and the international community that the machines have previously been tested.

“We have the machines for the 2023 elections but we do not want to take chances,” Professor Yakubu stressed.

“Each and every machine has been tested and confirmed functional,” he stated.

“For the last two weeks, our officials were in the 36 states of the federation testing these machines, and the functionality is simply encouraging,” he said.

Professor Yakubu, however, assured the electorate that INEC would implement the law that provides that where the BVAS machines fail to function completely, the commission shall re-conduct the elections in the affected polling units within 24 hours.
