Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA), has been urged to expedite passage of the free maternal newborn and child healthcare bill.

The Executive Director, Resource Center for Human Rights and Civic Education ,CHRICED), Dr. Ibrahim Zikrullahi made the call, during a media parley in kano.

According to him, sustainability of the free Maternal and Child Health Care Bill, will go a long way in uplifting healthcare delivery to international standards.

He noted that, the Executive Order 2001 which provided for free maternal care in Kano, had significantly improved maternal and child healthcare across the state.

The Executive Director stressed that, Kano State had been at the forefront of providing quality healthcare delivery, and would only maintain the tempo with legislative backing.

Dr. Zikrullahi highlighted that Nigeria was rated as the 20th on maternal mortality in the world, representing 10%, while Kano occupies a special place due to its high population.

For Kano State the huge population is an advantage which can be used to tap resources that can turn Kano into a shining example to other states”

He said that,the international community was supporting Kano state, to reduce the rate of maternal and child death, pointing out that more dividends of democracy would be achieved through accountability, good governance and interventions.

The Director described Kano State Ministry of Health ,and State House of Assembly as partners in progress, due to their commitment in mapping out a legislative framework on free maternal child healthcare,which had scaled 1st reading.

We are happy that the Kano State House of Assembly is doing it’s best to pass the law, and the executive would assent to it”

He advised the State government, State House of Assembly, and citizens to collaborate and work together in making the bill a reality.

Dr. Zikrullahi maintained that the resource center for human rights and civic education (CHRICED), would not relent in its efforts of promoting accountability and good governance to move the nation forward.
