Fire Raze Down Community School, One Week After N500m Appeal Fund Launch in Nasarawa


The Eggon Cultural Development Association ECDA has expressed sadness over the fire incident that burnt down a block of five class rooms to ashes in Eggon Community Secondary School, Nassarawa-Eggon local government area of nasarawa State.

The block of the classrooms was leased out to Delight College of Health Science and Technology, Nassarawa-Eggon by ECDA. the college occupied the block and has been operating as an health institution for the past three years.

Aside from other Academic records that burnt, the E-library of the school, with about twelve computers, a generator set, printer, photocopy machine was also destroyed in the incident.

The fire outbreak occurred at about 7;45 pm on Friday, last week, destroyed virtually every valuables.

The fire outbreak was coming one week, the Proprietor, ECDA, organized a five hundred million naira fund raising for the total overhauling of the Eggon Community Secondary School, Nasarawa-Eggon.

The appeal fund launched was specifically for the equiping of the school library, renovation of the decayed structures, fencing of the school, installation of internet facilities, improve staff welfare and purchase of equipment for the school laboratory among others.

The National President of ECDA Mandy David Abuluya, said, it is sad being, it exactly one week that ECDA organized a fund raising to renovate all the classes and to address the challenges confronting the school.

The ECDA president who couldn’t give details of damaged items, said that, the burnt block, being an health institution, valuable properties worth millions of naira was destroyed.

He explained that, as he got the news of the fire incident in the school, he calls the state office of the fire service for intervention. but unfortunately, the personnel of the service were not on ground to rescue the situation.

The ECDA President who frowned at the development, said the ECDA was going to improve on the general security situation, and will expedite action in the fencing of the school to checkmate such occurrence in future.

He said, at the moment, the proprietor hired only one security guard to watch over the school, and with the development, they are going to employ additional guards to intensify surveillance in and around the school.

The ECDA president then solicited the supports of the state and local governments as well as spirited individuals to assist them in rebuilding the school to former glory.

The ECDA Public Relation Officer, Alhaji Umar Abdullahi Galle, sensed that it is the handwork of saboteurs, saying ECDA will engage the services of expert to conduct forensic analysis of the situation and to unravel the cause.

Alhaji Umar Galle said, a fire of such nature is unusual that will spread simultaneously, even when there are no bushes around or electricity connected to the block.

He also, called on governments and members of the public to come to the aid of the school in support of ECDA to revamp the school.

Our correspondent observed that, the block of five class rooms was not connected to national grid, neither was there bushes at the surrounding, pointing to possible spread of wild fire of bush burning, even as the cause of the fire incident is yet to be ascertained.

Effort to reach out to the state fire service, as at the time of filing this report to ascertain the cause proved abortive.
