reps-seeks-reversal-of-decision-to-halt-east-west-rail-line-project

06/12/2022. REPS/RAIL LINES

House of Representatives has called on the executive arm to reverse its earlier decision to halt the East–West Rail Line Project.

This followed a motion by a member from Anambra State Mr Dozzie Nwanko at plenary adopted by the lawmakers.

The house was concern that the federal ministry of transport has stopped the project despite the concluded arrangement with Standard Chartered Bank and the Federal Government’s N30bn investment to the contract.

According to mover of the motion, non-completion of the Rail Project has forced travelers to suffer delay due to the deplorable state of the Calabar-Lagos with a number of check points.

He however, maintained that failure to complete the project within the Six years time frame will continue to put pressure on the two sea ports located in Port Harcourt and Lagos and the existing roads

The house also resolved to call on the executives to review its 25-Year Railway Strategic Plan part of which is to unbundle and commercialize the Nigeria Railway Corporation.

The house has mandated its Committee on Land Transportation to liaise with Federal Ministry of Transportation and other relevant agencies in ensuring that the East-West Coastal Rail Project was captured in the 2023 budget.
