Two officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service at the Lagos International Airport, have been banned from working in any Nigerian airport over extortion.

Their ‘On Duty Cards’ have also been withdrawn permanently, to serve as deterrent to others.

Their banned follows an investigation by at team of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Aviation Security officers who were commissioned to investigate an alleged extortion of the sum of ₦8,000 from a 14-year-old girl travelling on Lufthansa Airline on February 19, 2022.

The investigation followed a tweet by the girl’s mother who alleged the daughter was extorted the said amount.

In a statement by the Acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs FAAN, Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, the investigation revealed the allegation was true with the help of the footages on its CCTV facility that identified the two officers and with the cooperation from the Nigerian Immigration Service.

According to her, the officers were made to refund the exact amount collected from the passenger.

While commending the mother of the child, who has confirmed receipt of the money, for deeming it fit to escalate the case, and assisted in the course of the investigation, the Comptroller of Immigration, MMA Lagos and her team were also commended for their cooperation and support in addressing this issue.

The authority assured that, it will continue to identify and sanction any airport official, including FAAN officials found to be extorting passengers or perpetuating any act of illegality at our airports.
