Nigeria has called on Ukraine to order her border guards to also allow Nigerians fleeing her war with Russia to cross to Poland.

A statement by the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, says the government understands the tensed situation Ukrainian security personnel are experiencing, but that equal treatment and dignity should be meted to every race fleeing the conflict to safety.

The statement stresses that every person fleeing a conflict situation have the same right to safe passage under UN Convention, adding that colour of their passport or their skin should make no difference.

It calls on Nigerians to calm their nerves as diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of citizens trapped in Ukraine are ongoing.
