A Bill for an Act to amend the bank employees’ declaration of assets has passed the second reading in the House of Representatives.

Presenting the Bill on the floor of the house Mr. Francis Ejirogene, said the Act seeks to increase punishment on bank staff involved in fraudulent activities in customers’ accounts.

According to the lawmaker, the decision becomes necessary in view of the rampant cases of bank fraud and cybercrimes in the country.

In his Contribution, a member from Plateau State, Yussuf Gagdi, lamented that bank officials frustrate customers at will due to the absence of legal sanctions.

Also speaking, the Deputy Minority leader, Mr. Toby Okechukwu, suggested that banks should also be held liable for employing a fraudster.

Other lawmakers who contributed during a debate on the matter confirmed that if passed, the Bill would bring back the lost confidence in the banking sector across the country.
