The Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Center, Gusau, Zamfara State, Dr Mohammed Bello Kwatarkwashi has inaugurated a seven man committee on Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium, saying that cancer is curable.

Inaugurating the committee members at the federal medical Center laboratory Gusau, Dr Kwatarkwashi, said some people believe that patients suffering from cancer can’t be cured.

He called on the committee members to be more active in finding the challenges being faced by cancer patients and put more efforts to make more awareness on the prevention and control of the ailment.

The seven Member committee were drawn from various medical departments of the FMC, Gusau, with equal opportunity to contribute towards the fight against prostate cancer in the State.

Speaking earlier, the Sight Principal Investigator, Dr Olayinka Benjamin said it became necessary to conduct a research on the causes, prevention and cure of the cancer especially that, of prostate.

In his presentation during the inauguration, Dr Shehu Umar, said there was poor awareness, poor risk perceptions among vulnerable groups and late presentation among other challenges of prostate cancer.

Dr Shehu also enumerated some challenges being faced by patient with prostate cancer which includes unavailability of expertise and treatment, Accessibility, financial and geographic factors, Competition with traditional and complementary medicine as well as Gross inadequacy of indigenous research among others.

Also speaking, the head of clinical Services of the center, Dr. Onazi urged the newly inaugurated cancer committee to redouble their efforts in the fight against prostate cancer.

He called on them to strive to give the center a name that will enable others to borrow leaf from it.
