Zamfara Assembly Prioritizes Legislation On Disable People

Zamfara State House of Assembly will accord topmost priority to people living with disabilities and their needs in its legislative processes to meet international best legislative procedures.

The assurance was given by the acting Governor and the Speaker State Assembly Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya when they declared open a one Day public hearing on bill seeking prohibition of all sorts of discrimination against persons with disabilities, organised by the House standing committee on women, children and social welfare.

The bill which was a private member bill fully sponsored by Alhaji Salihu Usman Zurmi representing Zurmi East who is also a disable person.

Speaking, Alhaji Nasiru Magarya said the assembly was not only considering people with disabilities in legislative engagement, but trying to obtain an international best practices, and in conformity with Islamic injunctions.

He assured the gathering that, the 6th Assembly under his leadership would leave no stone unturned in given the bill a third reading and subsequently pass it into law, saying that the state governor would surely assent to it.

The lawmaker while commending the foresight of the sponsor of the bill Salihu Usman Zurmi, also saluted the courage of the House standing committee on women, children and social Welfare under the chairmanship of Kabiru Magaji Kwatarkwashi.

Earlier, the Chairman House Committee on Women, children and social welfare Kabiru Magaji Kwatarkwashi said organising a public hearing would avail the committee the opportunity to take the bill to the door steps of the disable and also give them a level playing ground to give input on the the proposed bill.

In a submission, the Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Muhammad Ahmad advocated for leaders at all strata of governance to learn to talk with people with disabilities particularly deaf and dumb to understand their immediate needs with the view to assisting them .
