The Senate has reaffirmed commitments towards achieving its agenda for sustainable development
President of the Senate Ahmad Lawan gave the confirmation during a one day public hearing on a bill to establish an institution of information and communication Technology in Iwu, Osun state
Ahmad Lawan represented by senator Emmanual Oker-Jev said at the
beginning of the 9th Assembly, the Senate formulated a legislative agenda which part of it was to push the frontiers of information communication technology in tandem with the current realities.
According to him, any effort along those lines is encouraged by the leadership of the current Senate, saying that this bill if passed into law will help in pushing the frontier of what they set for themselves as a legislative agenda.
He, therefore, encouraged members of the public and stakeholders to give the best to ensure that when this Bill was passed into law can stand the test of time, adding that ” We always say that we are your servants who won’t be here without members of the public and don’t claim to know it all “
The senate president advised the stakeholders to give their best to ensure that what comes out at the end of it was a reflection not just of the senate or the National Assembly, but of what Nigerians want.
Earlier in a welcome address, the chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime Senator Yakubu Husaini believed that it had become necessary to encourage capacity development in digital technology, due to its importance in our homes, workplaces, schools and another social-economic environment.
He reiterated that Digital Technology had become the driver of all aspects of human development, a vital tool for businesses and service delivery and a pilot for the transformation of economists.
Senator Husaini said it was also vital in the field of medicine or security and intelligence, education, banking, agriculture, Health, Services. Manufacturing, Aviation, power Generations, Marine Services, Building Technology Immigration, Services Etc.
Speaking, the sponsor of the bill senator Aderele Adeyemi believed that creating institutions like this would help in achieving the desired objectives in information and communication technology in Nigeria
However in their submission on the bill the ministary of Communication and Digital Economy represented by the parmanent secretary advised that the bill be step down,
The ministry argued that Government was crying for limited funds and even the existing institutions that teach such courses were not adequately funded instead of creating new ones would be a futile effort.
