Former President of South Africa President FW de Klerkand has died at the age of 85.

Mr de Klerk, the last white man to lead the country between 1989 and 1994 was a pivotal figure in the nation’s transition to democracy.

Mr de Klerk was diagnosed with cancer this year, according to a spokesman .

In 1990 he announced he was releasing anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, leading to multi-party polls in 1994.
