Federal Government has reiterated its determination to secure Nigeria’s border with Niger Republic for improved development.

Secretary to the Government of Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha made this known at a local bilateral committee meeting at the Government House, Maiduguri.

The meeting involved Borno and Yobe State and Diffa region of Niger Republic.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs, Mr Andrew Adejo, Mr Boss Mustapha explained that Nigeria and Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation was established in the 1990 to curb the waves of security threads, smuggling, trafficking and other sundry crimes.

Secretary General Nigeria/Niger Joint Commission, Ambassador Rabiu Akawu said that Nigeria and Niger had from time immemorial shared many things in common.

Ambassador Akawu maintained that the Commission would work in accordance with existing laws to safeguard the border of the two nations.  

Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur, also the Chairman Boundary Committee explained that Borno State Government was in the forefront of ensuring tight security at its borders with other nations.

He added that the State would strengthen relationship with the Commission for the safety and security of communities along the border.

Governor of Diffa region, Isa Lamine who was represented by his Deputy, Yahaya Gurbi thanked Nigerian and Borno State Government for their commitment with Niger Republic and pledge Niger’s continued collaboration with Nigeria.
