The Kebbi State Government wants the federal government to take an urgent steps in dredging the river Niger so as to avoid most of flooding activities that occur in riverlink communities of the river Niger.
The State Governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, made the appeal at a One Day Stakeholders Meeting on the outcome of NEEDS ASSESSMENT conducted by the Hydroelectric Power Producing Area’s Development Commission HYPPADEC, in collaboration with Humanitarian Partner “New Approach” held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
Governor Atiku Bagudu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the State, Alhaji Umar Babale, commended the Commission for identifying with communities that were affected by flooding activities of the River Niger and micro manage its impacts.
According to him, other problematic areas highlighted by the commission for intervention are , particularly schools, hence the state government doing its best to ensure that the problems gets solved.
The Managing Director, Hydroelectric Power Producing Area’s Development Commission HYPPADEC, Alhaji Ahmed Abubakar Yelwa, said the Commission has carried out a Need Assessment of about twenty eight thousand households in the six states under the commission that were affected by flooding activities of the River Niger.
According to him, the Commission has identified seven thousand, two hundred and eighteen households in about seven local government areas in Kebbi State that were affected by the flooding activities of the River Niger.
The Managing Director said every six month, about eight hundred youth in the affected communities would be trained on skills acquisition by the Commission.
The Financial Adviser for the partner, “New Approach” Lilian Iwu, said the partner was more interested in projects development especially on the needs of the less privilege societies.
She commended HYPPADEC for identifying and carrying out a Needs Assessment exercise of communities affected by the flooding activities of the River Niger in Kebbi State.
