Borno state government has expressed commitment to reinvigorate the education sector in the post insurgency recovery effort.
Governor Babagana Zulum made the commitment while declaring open a three day conference for principals of government secondary schools in Maiduguri.
The education sector in Borno state is re-emergening after more than decade-long devastation occasioned by the Boko Haram insurgency.
Figures from Borno state government indicates that about 90 percent of schools in twenty local government areas have been completly destroyed by the insurgents.
Aside from destruction of physical infrastructure, the crisis has had traumatic effect on teachers as well students resulting in negative behavior, indiscipline and non challant attitude to work.
This informed the three day conference for principals of public secondary schools to address these emerging challenges.
Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum said his administration have initiated alot of institutional reforms and policies alongside infrastructural projects in the education sector.
“Government had over the years, responded squarely to the ideological war against education by increasing budgetary allocations and grants to the sector along with massive recruitment of teachers, improvement of the feeding system and set up of various committees to address these problems, Governor Zulum stressed “.
The Governor remarked that in an effort to improve the fallen standard of education in the state, the law establishing the state Universal Basic Education Board SUBEB would be reviewed.
He also directed the ministry of education, SUBEB and Teaching Service Board to work in synergy for the betterment of the education sector.
Commissioner for Education Alhaji Lawan Wakilbe observed that one of the emerging issues that the conference will deliberate on is learning centers created in the aftermath of Boko Haram crisis.
Chairman Borno state Teaching Service Board Professor Sulieman Bello said the state has enrolled 1.3 million children, employed 800 science based teachers and also promoted over 2000 teachers between 2019 and 2020.
The conference is expected to submit recommendations to government that will proffer solutions to emerging challenges in the education sector.
