Federal Government has been urged to consider the dredging of River Niger to prevent perennial flooding and create job for the youths.

Coordinator of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria,(RIFAN) in Kwara state,Mallam Ahmed Saba made the call while speaking with Journalists in Ilorin.

He said the dredging of the river will allow free flow of water from Upper Niger to lower Niger.

According to him, if the dredging is done before the raining season it will enable rice farmers along the river banks to plant three times in a year.

Mallam Saba explained that the exercise will also afford Fishermen and Transporters opportunity to earn a living.

He appealed to Northern governors to support the federal government in achieving the long awaited dredging of river Niger.

The Coordinator however urged government not to relocate those residents on the River banks from their ancestral homes.
