Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) has embarked on an indefinite strike.
President of the union, Anderson Ezeibe, announced this at a press briefing in Abuja today.
According to the president of the union, members of ASUP have agreed to indefinitely shut all the Nigerian Polytechnics until their demands are met.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu had on Monday, called for an emergency meeting with the union to avert the proposed strike action.
ASUP’s strike comes up few months after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called off its nine-month strike in January this year.
He expressed displeasure that Federal Government had not responded to series of letters written over the matter since the expiration of the union’s ultimatum issued since March 2020.
Comrade Ezeibe listed the twelve-points demands of the union to include non-release of the 10 months arrears of minimum wage owed members in Federal Polytechnics and non-implementation of same in several states own institutions, non-reconstitution of governing councils leading to disruption of administrative processes in polytechnics since May 2020 and victimization of officials of the union in some states own polytechnics.
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, President, Comrade Ezeibe expressed displeasure over the absence of a commission for polytechnics, which had adverse effects on the running of Polytechnics in country.
He appealed to Members of the public to show understanding and support efforts of the union towards salvaging the polytechnic subsector from total collapse.
