Results of the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Certificates (WASSCE) have been released.

The Head, National Office of the West African Examinations Council WAEC, Mr. Patick Areghan announced the release of the result at a news briefing in Lagos.

He said out of the 1,538,441 candidates that sat for the examination, One Million, Three Thousand Six Hundred and Sixty Eight candidates representing 65. 24% obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Mr. Patick Areghan noted that the performance of candidates in this year’s examination was an improvement on that of last year which stood at 64. 18%.

He attributed improvements in the performance of candidates in this year’s examination to engagement of students in online teaching by some schools, parents ability to monitor their wards closely during the lockdown which made them study hard and the social distancing in the examinations halls.

The Head, however said, candidates that have contracted COVID-19 infection during the conduct of the examination in some states were able to write all their papers and they all recovered fully from infection.

Mr. Patick Areghan who urged candidates to access the results from their school authorities, said not less than 10 states that were still owing WAEC would not have results of their students released  until they pay.

Out of the total number of candidates that sat for the 2020 WASSCE,  the results of 250,149 candidates, representing 13. 98% are withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.
