The Presidency has defended President Muhammadu Buhari over the removal of fuel subsidy, saying it is the right thing to do which previous administrations could not implement.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, in a statement in Abuja, pointed out that the president is taking both popular and unpopular decisions as a leader based on prevailing circumstances.

It notes that subsidy removal has long been seen as a game-changer by successive administrations but the courage to implement the reforms was lacking.

The statement said history will be kind to Muhammadu Buhari for eliminating the evil of corruption embedded in subsidies.

While the Presidency noted the argument of critics as to the timing of the subsidy removal, it pointed out that what President Buhari needed is the support of all including the opposition.
