UN Appoints Pauline Tallen To Head Global Committee

The United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect has appointed the Minister of Women Affairs Dame Pauline Tallen to Head a Global committee that will develop a framework of analysis for the prevention of atrocity crimes and genocide from the perspective of women.

The Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, Ms. Alice Nderitu made this known in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Women Affairs.

Ms Alice explained that the existing framework of analysis on the prevention of atrocity crime does not reflect issues of women and the responsibility of the committee was to reflect the perspective of women in conflict prevention and the peace process against genocide.

In July we are convening very eminent women from around the world. In Italy, we will seat with these women and we will draw up a frame work of analysis for the prevention of atrocity crime. We already have a frame work of analysis but this framework does not have the mark of women. We do not see issues that are seen from the lenses of women.” she stated.

Ms Nderitu stressed the importance of women’s participation in decision-making processes especially in the area of peace and conflict resolutions to guarantee its success and impact.

Responding, the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, expressed appreciation for the consideration to provide leadership for the global assignment and gave the assurance that Nigerian women would relentlessly play their roles in ensuring peace across the world.

“On behalf of Nigerian women, I say thank you for the honour to lead other African leaders for us to go and find solutions to issues affecting genocides and all forms of violence within our region and the world at large,” She said

The United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide plays a special advisory role to the United Nations Secretary General in advancing national and international efforts to protect the population from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing as well as their incitements.
