Toilet Day: Borno Earmarks Over N8B For Water, Sanitation Facilities

Borno state government has earmarked 8.2 billion naira for the provision of water,  sanitation and hygiene WASH facilities across the twenty seven local government areas of the state. 

General Manager State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency RUWASSA , Dr. Ali Musa stated this at an event to mark 2022 World Toilet Day in Maiduguri. 

Dr. Musa explained that the facilities and services to be provided include six mini-water works, ten standard earth dams for irrigation and water supply as well as construction of toilets in public places.

According to him, many electricity powered boreholes will be converted to solar-driven boreholes in an effort to achieve clean energy environment.

“Governor Babagana Zulum has approved over 8 billion naira  for the provision of WASH facilities and services cutting across the eire state. This will compromise construction of six cluster of boreholes connected to tanks and reticulated into the communities ” Dr Musa said.

General Manager Borno State Environmental Protection Agency BOSEPA Alhaji Abubakar Sulieman remarked that sixteen percent of the total population of the state still practice open defecation. 

He however expressed the commitment of the state government to end the menace by the year 2030.

United Nations Children Education Fund UNICEF Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Manager Mamita Bora said only fifty three percent of the population in the state has access to basic sanitation facilities and four percent to safely managed sanitation. 

She reiterated the commitment of the UNICEF to continue to support Borno state to achieve open defecation status.
