A former France striker and record holder for the most goals scored at a single World Cup, Just Fontaine is dead.
Fontaine died at the age of 89.
The former France striker scored a record 13 goals for France at the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden; the record for most goals scored in a World Cup career is 16 by Germany’s Miroslav Klose.
Fontaine broke the record of 11 goals Hungary striker Sndor Kocsis scored at the 1954 tournament.
As a player, Just Fontaine also starred for French Club, Paris St-Germain and Stade de Reims, Nice, and then moved on to Morocco, where he played for USM Casablanca.
The mercurial striker played for France between 1953 and 1960 and scored 30 goals in 31 appearances.
He played for Stade de Reims for the majority of his club career, scoring 145 goals in 152 games, earning three Ligue 1 championships, and making the 1959 European Cup final.
Before guiding Paris St-Germain to promotion to the top division in 1974, Fontaine managed just two games while serving as the coach of the France National squad.
He coached the Morocco team, finished third at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.
