Sultan Advocates Indigenous Solutions To Address Governance Deficit

Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has identified lack accountability, trust deficit, peace and security as the major challenges of leadership and governance in Nigeria. 

Sultan Abubakar made this known at the 2022 public lecture of Barewa Old Boys Association BOBA in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. 

Barewa Old Boys Association BOBA is organising its annual lecture in the North East since it was established more than eighty years ago.

Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III in his presentation titled ” The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria: Looking inwards and falling back on indigenous resources” noted that the ability of leaders to ensure good governance is what defines leadership. 

He advocated the adoption of home grown solutions embedded in the rich intellectual and cultural heritage to address governance issues in the society. 

The Sultan who is also the acting Chairman Board of Trustees of the Association, stressed the need to build trust between political leaders and their followers which is critical in addressing insecurity and ensure compliance to government policies and programmes. 

Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum noted the contribution of Barewa College in the advancement of the education sector. 

He called on political office holders to reduce the cost of governance and channel the resources to the development of their respective constituencies. 

Shehu of Borno Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Elkanemi appreciated BOBA for the choosing Borno to host the event, explaining the people of kanem Borno and Sokoto caliphate share common values. 

President of the Association Dr Dahiru Ibrahim called on government to revamp the education sector to produce better leaders in the future.
